Post-film Q&A with Gary Hustwit

AIGA San Diego & Gary Hustwit Present, Objectified. Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.

Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?

Following the screening will be a after party at Subtext with a live performance by El Ten Eleven from the films soundtrack. General public $15, students, AIGA, IDSA members $12

Dario Robleto

June 29th, 2009 Posted in Subtext Loves | No Comments »

It is not often we hear of stablished artists who’s carrier has/is heavely influenced by Hip Hop and DJ’s. For those of us who live here in San Diego we’ve had the opportunity to view some of his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, where I first encountered his work. Dario Robleto’s work is comprised of natural elements, cassette tape recordings, and many, many other intriguing specimens. Which when compiled form a new poem or song. Much like when a DJ samples tracks to create new beats. Perhaps that is why I feel his work speaks to a scholar as well as it would to a hobo. Read more about him here and you’ll understand what I mean.

Matt Rainwaters

My good friend Lou Mora recently sent me this site after a lunchtime conversation about portraiture. I know, it sounds lame. We’re actually not that dorky, the subject just happen to come up. Anyways, check out the great work of Matt Rainwaters. His portfolio is really good, but do you know what is even better than that? His beardfolio! That’s right. A whole series documenting the Beard and Mustache Championships in Anchorage Alaska. It’s pretty magnificent.

Vintage Desks

June 26th, 2009 Posted in Subtext Loves | No Comments »

I found this sweet 1946 George Nelson desk on Apartment Therapy and I want it. This desk is so sweet, I’d probably give my left nut to own one. Ok, maybe that’s a bit extreme. It is beautiful though… (the nut, that is). The desk above was auctioned at WRIGHT for a whopping $10,625. Damn. I’m not even sure I could get that much for Lefty McNut himself.

Tyler Lang

I ran across the work of Tyler Lang, and was immediately impressed by his thoughtful and systematic approach to design & illustration. He has tons of great work on his website, but the information graphics he’s done really standout in my opinion. The work he did for GOOD magazine shown here on his blog is friggin’ outstanding! I’m no illustrator, but his work makes me want to try my hand at some of this stuff. I love it.

Michael, thanks for the memories.

Michael Jackson
1958-2009

I know that for the past few years Michael Jackson was in the news for all the wrong reasons, but hopefully he will be remembered in good light. His amazing influence on pop-culture was like no other. He changed the music world as we know it, and we watched it all unfold in front of our eyes. I can remember the day I saw him moonwalk on TV for the first time – and literally overnight – it was a global sensation. He was a true artistic genius, and he will be missed.

Sarah Yates Photography

June 25th, 2009 Posted in Subtext Loves | No Comments »

Sarah Yates is a good friend of mine who has recently made The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs her home away from home, and she’s taken lots of great pictures along the way. The ones above are some of my favorite shots, but there’s lots of sweet stuff on her blog, so check it out for yourself! Way to go Sarah, you rock!

Modern Camping

If you find yourself traveling through the Cascades just northeast of Seattle, be sure to reserve yourself a Rolling Hut. They are only $80 a night, and it’s definitely a bit more lavish than your dome tent. Tom Kundig (part of Seattle firm Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen) is the architect behind these modern masterpieces which cost about $75K each to produce. Cheaper than a lot of RV’s!

Memo Plates

June 25th, 2009 Posted in Subtext Loves | No Comments »

I stumbled across these pretty cool memo plates the other day (thanks George), and thought I’d share. I spent all of my college years eating burritos and burgers off of paper plates, so I can relate to the joy of eating food off of paper surfaces. However, I can imagine that eating a meal off of a porcelain plate that looks like a pad of paper would make me feel like I’ve really made it. I think I just talked myself into buying a set. If I’ve peaked your interest, you can get them here.

If you haven’t heard of Keegan Gibbs, don’t worry, you will soon. He is currently working on a documentary with Ozzy Osbourne as he tours the world. He’s also preparing for an exhibition and will be releasing a book towards the end of the year. The book will be compiled of photos from some of Los Angeles most notorious graffiti artists as they go work the graveyard shift cross counry. Sounds interesting? check out some of his recent footage here.
